Kitchen stools

My partner and myself are quite tall. When we designed our new house, we chose to have a custom made kitchen with a ‘cooking island’ so that we would have a nice view when preparing our meals, and work on a comfortable and ergonomic table top height. A cooking island calls for stools, only commercially available stools are too low and too plain.

I challenged myself to make four identical bar stools for our kitchen island. I chose an ash base and an oak seat. The first design looked nice on paper, but a full-scale elaboration showed that the legs were much too coarse. I then made two MDF moulds from the modified design, one for the legs and one for the seat. With this I could mill the parts into shape with a copy milling machine. The legs and seat are finished with 45º-edge milling cutters. The whole is oiled.
