Veneer is commercially available, but I made the veneer for this tray myself – to better understand what it takes. The design consists of rectangles of maple and beech wood and squares of elm wood. Any deviation in dimensions becomes visible as a crack, in which dirt and moisture can collect during use. It was therefore quite a job to make the pieces exactly square and to size. But the result is impressive. The veneer is glued to a 6 mm birch plywood plate. The frame is made of maple. Finished with a base coat and liquid wax from Auro.
