A second life for oak side tables

Every now and then I refurbish old furniture. This set of side tables was an heirloom from a client’s parental home. Typical Dutch 70s style: sturdy, solid and dark finished oak. I wouldn’t be surprised if this set was made by Meubelfabriek Oisterwijk.

The varnish was damaged by intensive use, and the dark colour was no longer up to date. I removed as much of the varnish layer as possible from hard-to-reach places with an environmentally friendly paint stripper (Fluxaf Green), sanded the tables bare and smooth and then refinished them with Auro impregnating oil. This finish gives the oak a beautiful matt honey colour. Above you can see what the smallest table looks like before and after the restoration.

The end result: a fresh set of side tables, ready for many years of use.
