TableBox – from vision to reality

The customer's request

“I have a collection of games that I would like to readily transport and demonstrate at fantasy- and medieval festivals in Germany and the Netherlands.

Could you help design and build such a box that would also serve as a game table?”

MY rolE

Detailed design, project management and realisation

Project overview

When Nat J. approached me with a bold idea, I knew this would be no ordinary project. His vision? A fully wooden box that could store game pieces and transform into a game table, designed specifically for use at fantasy- and medieval festivals across Germany and the Netherlands.

Nat shared a detailed concept sheet, complete with sketches and 25 functional requirements. The challenge was clear: combine portability, durability, functionality and aesthetic appeal into a single handcrafted piece.

After multiple design iterations, rounds of prototyping and plenty of testing, I was proud to deliver the final product to Nat: the TableBox. A one-of-a-kind creation that blends craftsmanship with functionality, ready to support Nat’s festival adventures.

As the feasibility of several specifications was uncertain, I created mock-ups and prototypes using cardboard and scrap wood. This allowed me to explore design options and show the client how they would work, without wasting valuable wood.

The result is a beautiful, versatile, and functional gaming table.

Partnering is key for success

Close collaboration with the client was essential to the creation of the TableBox. Through frequent consultation and the incorporation of feedback, we were able to jointly develop a product that fully meets the expectations. The client was involved every step of the way, from the initial design to the final finishing touches, resulting in a gaming table that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

Since turning wood is not my expertise, the turning of the table legs and knobs were in the capable hands of Suzan Sijmonsma of Verdraaid Mooi.

Step 1

Design

The client’s concepts have been converted into a digital design, that evolved with new specifications and wishes throughout the project. This ensured a clear shared vision of the final product.

Step 2

Mock-up

I wanted to test the construction that makes the TableBox portable. I built a simple model out of corrugated cardboard and used photos to show form, functionality and design risks.

Step 3

Prototype

To refine and test the construction of the legs, I created several prototypes out of cheap materials. These demonstrated the technical and mechanical feasibility.

Step 4

Final product

The final product was created incrementally as well, to allow adjustments to the design and include new ideas on the fly.

Customer Testimonial

Exceptional Craftsmanship & Collaboration. Highly recommended for anyone seeking custom, high-quality craftsmanship.
Working with Mariëlle on the creation of the TableBox was an outstanding experience from start to finish. I came to her with a complex and ambitious idea: a fully wooden box that could store a variety of game pieces and also transform into a functional game table — all designed to fit the atmosphere of medieval and fantasy festivals.
Mariëlle took on the challenge with incredible professionalism, creativity, and attention to detail. She carefully reviewed my sketches and a long list of 25 functional requirements. Through multiple design iterations and prototypes, she brought the concept to life in a way that exceeded all expectations.
The final product is not only beautifully crafted but also highly functional and durable — a true testament to Mariëlle’s skill and dedication. Her ability to listen, adapt, and deliver with precision makes her an exceptional designer and maker.
